Ghotki train crash – Victims to get between PKR100,000-300,000 aid depending on injuries

The Pakistan Railways (PR) authorities have announced that the heirs of those killed in the Ghotki traing accident will be given PKR1.5 million each.

Meanwhile, the victims of the crash will be given a minimum of PKR100,000 and a maximum of PKR300,000, depending on the nature of their injuries,

Aside from the authority has also set up an investigation committee comprising of 21 grade officer, to probe into the accident.

Ghokti train crash, What happened?

Two passenger trains — Millat Express and Sir Syed Express – collided near Daharki, a city located in the Ghotki district of upper Sindh, leaving 31 dead and over 100 injured on Monday, according to officials.

As per the latest reports from Pakistan Railways (PR), the crash occurred around 03:30 a.m. after a Millat Express train — headed from Karachi to Sargodha — derailed and fell across the “down track”. Soon after getting derailed the train collided with a Sir Syed Express train coming from Rawalpindi.

The incident, as per PR spokesperson, took place near the Raiti railway station.

Due to the accident, six coaches of Millat Express were derailed and five coaches overturned, while two coaches of the Sir Syed Express train were derailed and three overturned, the PR statement said, adding that 31 people had been killed while more than 100 had been injured.

Rescue teams comprising of police, health officials and local administration were deployed soon after the incident. A relief train has also been dispatched from Rohri. Additionally, helpline centres have been set up for passengers in Karachi, Sukkur, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi.

PM orders ‘comprehensive investigation’ into railways safety fault lines

Expressing shock over the grave accident that happened in Ghotki region and the loss of lives, PM Imran Khan has ordered a “comprehensive investigation” into it.

Taking to Twitter, the prime minister instructed Railways Minister Azam Swati to arrive at the site and help the injured with provision of medical assistance.

Various government officials and politicians have expressed grief over the accident.

Some people on social media are criticizing the government for not paying attention to the old infrastructure of railway tracks in Pakistan. Others are demanding resignations as promised by Imran Khan before taking power.
